Short description

The Nines follows three men whose lives become entangled in strange and unsettling ways. A troubled actor, a television writer-producer, and a celebrated video game designer each find themselves in situations where the line between reality and fiction is difficult to place. The film is divided into three connected episodes, and the stories gradually cross over as the same concerns surface again and again. The cast is led by Ryan Reynolds, who plays the three central roles, alongside Melissa McCarthy and Hope Davis, each of whom also appears in multiple parts. Elle Fanning, David Denman and Octavia Spencer appear in supporting roles.

John August directed and wrote the film, with Bruce Cohen, Dan Jinks and Dan Etheridge producing. It was August's first film as director, following his work as a screenwriter. Released in 2007, it runs 100 minutes and blends drama, fantasy, mystery and thriller elements. On TMDB it holds a rating of 6 out of 10 from 488 votes, a moderate score that suggests a mixed response from viewers rather than broad enthusiasm.

What's left behind the scenes

  • John August was very concerned about whether a child could give a convincing performance, and for that reason in particular, he gave Elle Fanning's character almost no lines. Later, however, he saw her on set, realized his fears were unfounded, and gave Fanning new lines during the reshooting of several scenes.
  • Almost the entire second chapter of the film was shot without a script. The actors improvised on set.
  • The house where Gavin lives and Gary stays belongs to director John August.
