Bangkok Dangerous

Joe is a professional assassin who works alone and keeps no ties to anyone. He travels to Bangkok to carry out a series of contract killings for a local crime boss named Surat, and to avoid leaving any trace of himself he hires Kong, a street pickpocket, to run errands and act as his go-between. Joe intends to keep the arrangement strictly temporary, but when the young man is nearly killed, he begins teaching him the skills of his trade instead. At the same time, Joe starts a relationship with a deaf-mute shop assistant, and his usual detachment begins to give way, even as Surat turns against him and takes Kong, leaving Joe to fight back with everything he has.

The film is a remake of the 1999 Thai production of the same name, directed by the Pang brothers, Danny Pang and Oxide Pang Chun, from a screenplay by Jason Richman. It sits between The Messengers and The Storm Warriors in the directing careers of both brothers, for whom it was the fourth title in the chronological list of features. Nicolas Cage stars as Joe and also produced, alongside Norman Golightly and William Sherak. Shahkrit Yamnarm plays Kong, with Charlie Yeung as Fon and Nirattisai Kaljaruek as Surat.

Made for about 45 million dollars, the film returned roughly 42 million worldwide. Audiences rate it 5.3 out of 10 on IMDb across 60,000 votes, and 5.3 out of 10 on TMDB from a far smaller base of 1,173 votes. A critics' rating of 3.4 out of 10 from 93 reviews places it noticeably below the audience scores.
