Before Midnight continues the story of Jesse and Céline, the American writer and the French woman who first met on a train to Vienna and met again years later in Paris. Now living together in Paris with twin daughters, they are spending a summer in Greece as guests of a fellow writer. The holiday ends with Jesse seeing his teenage son off to the United States, an event that prompts him to weigh the choices he has made. A night the couple spends alone away from their children becomes an occasion for long-suppressed grievances to surface, putting their relationship in doubt.
Richard Linklater directed the film, the thirteenth of the twenty-two features he has directed in chronological order, following Bernie and preceding Boyhood. He wrote the screenplay with Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy, who return as Jesse and Céline; the supporting cast includes Seamus Davey-Fitzpatrick, Jennifer Prior, Charlotte Prior and Xenia Kalogeropoulou. The film was produced by Linklater with Sara Woodhatch and Christos V. Konstantakopoulos.
Made for about 3 million dollars, the film took roughly 21 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.9/10 from around 185,000 votes, while TMDB users give it 7.5/10 from far fewer votes. A critics' rating of 8.7/10 from 202 reviews places it above both audience scores.
