My Name Is Khan
Short description
My Name Is Khan centres on Rizwan Khan, a Muslim man from the Borivali area of Mumbai who has Asperger's syndrome. He moves to San Francisco to live with his brother and sister-in-law, and there he falls in love with Mandira, a Hindu single mother. Despite his family's objections, the two marry and settle into a happy life with her young son. That changes after the attacks of September 11, 2001, when attitudes towards Muslims shift sharply and a personal tragedy pulls the couple apart. Determined to win back the woman he loves, Rizwan sets out on a journey across America.
Karan Johar directed the film and co-wrote it with Shibani Bathija, with Gauri Khan and Hiroo Johar also producing. It was Johar's fourth feature as director, arriving between Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna and Student Of The Year. Shah Rukh Khan plays Rizwan and Kajol plays Mandira, with supporting turns from Arjan Aujla, Jimmy Shergill, Sonya Jehan and Zarina Wahab among a cast of 43.
Released in February 2010, the drama and romance runs 165 minutes and was made for roughly 12 million dollars, going on to take about 42 million worldwide. It holds a 7.9 on IMDb from around 123,000 votes and an 8 on TMDB from a much smaller base of 1,503, while critics rated it 6.7 from 29 reviews, so audiences rate it more warmly than reviewers do.
What's left behind the scenes
- Initially, Kajol was considered for the role of Mandira, but since she did not want to participate in the filming, the role was given to Karisma Kapoor. Without much hesitation, Kajol nevertheless agreed to participate in the film.
- Shah Rukh Khan even off-set tried not to break character.
- Karisma Kapoor was originally supposed to play the main female role in the film, but producer Karan Johar insisted that the role be given to his favorite actress, Kajol.
- While working on the role, Shah Rukh Khan spent time with people suffering from Asperger's syndrome, watched hospital video recordings, and read relevant books to understand how these people behave, walk, and talk.
- Director Karan Johar and screenwriter Shibani Bathija spoke with Chris and Gisela Slater-Walker, the authors of the book that inspired Bathija to include a love story in the script.
- Shabana Azmi was initially cast as Rizvan's mother, but she left the project due to a delay in filming caused by the lead actor's shoulder injury.
- The role of Zakir was to be played by Amir Bashir, but he was unable to obtain an American visa, and the role went to Jimmy Shergill.

- Shah Rukh Khan flew to the United States to participate in a film's promotional campaign, but was held up at customs. It took over an hour to resolve the situation. Everyone assumed it was a clever publicity stunt until it turned out not to be. The film's producers were furious about the treatment of the actor. However, his character in the film "My Name Is Khan" fared little better.
- The Zakir house in San Francisco is the same one used as the Tanner family home in the sitcom "Full House" (1987-1995).
- The flood episode in Wilhelmina, Georgia, was inspired by Hurricane Katrina (2005), which caused particularly severe damage to New Orleans. This episode was filmed in Mumbai, India, which was experiencing a drought. The filming lasted 10 days, and 20 tankers of water, 12,000 liters each, were used per day of filming. A family of four consumes an average of about 360 liters of water. The drought in Mumbai ended during the filming.
