Lakeview Terrace is a crime drama about a young couple, Chris and Lisa Mattson, who move into their first home in a Los Angeles suburb. Their neighbor is Abel Turner, an LAPD officer and single father who has made himself the self-appointed guardian of the street. He disapproves of the couple's interracial marriage, and what begins as intrusive scrutiny gradually turns into open hostility.
The film was directed by Neil LaBute, released in 2008 and marking his fifth feature after Nurse Betty, Possession, The Shape of Things and The Wicker Man. The screenplay was written by David Loughery and Howard Korder, and the cast includes Samuel L. Jackson as Turner, Patrick Wilson and Kerry Washington as the Mattsons, with Ron Glass, Justin Chambers and Jay Hernandez in supporting roles. Will Smith was among the producers.
Made for about 20 million dollars, the film earned roughly 28 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds a 6.2 rating from around 59,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6 out of 10 from a much smaller base of about 1,200 votes. A critics' rating of 5.5 out of 10 from 165 reviews places it somewhat below the audience scores, pointing to a mixed professional response to a commercial thriller built around a well-known lead performance.
