Eight Crazy Nights
Short description
Eight Crazy Nights centres on Davey Stone, a man in his early thirties whose reckless behaviour and disregard for the people around him have worn out the patience of his small town. After one destructive night out during Hanukkah, he is brought before a judge who is ready to send him to prison. Instead, Davey is offered a last chance: he must work as an assistant referee for a youth basketball league over the holidays. He assumes the job will be easy until he meets Whitey Duvall, the eccentric head referee, whose cheerful optimism could not contrast more sharply with Davey's attitude. The two men nonetheless form an unlikely friendship.
The 2002 animated comedy was directed by Seth Kearsley and written by Adam Sandler, Allen Covert and Brad Isaacs. Sandler produced it with Covert and Jack Giarraputo, and he voices several characters, including Davey, Whitey, Eleanore and a deer. Jackie Sandler, Kevin Nealon, Austin Stout, Rob Schneider and Norm Crosby also lend their voices, with 39 credited cast members and 91 credited crew.
Made for about 34 million dollars, the film returned roughly 24 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.3 from around 28,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 5.2 from 387 votes. A critics' rating of 3.7 from 109 reviews places it below both audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Initially, Sony Pictures refused to participate in the animated project, considering it too risky, but relented under pressure from Amy Pascal, who held a senior position in the company at the time and to whom Adam Sandler turned personally.
- The main character's appearance was based on a photograph of Adam Sandler at age 19.
