Marie Krøyer is celebrated as the most beautiful woman in Europe, married to P.S. Krøyer, one of Denmark's most renowned painters. The couple's home life, together with their young daughter Vibeke, appears enviable, filled with art, status and comfort. Behind that surface, however, the marriage is strained: Krøyer suffers from a mental disorder and his moods shift without warning, while Marie's own hopes of being a wife, mother and artist go unmet. After her husband is hospitalised, she travels away to recover, and meets the Swedish composer Hugo Alfvén, with whom she begins to fall in love.
Directed by Bille August, the film is a Danish-Swedish drama released in 2012 and running 103 minutes. It is the eighth of the fifteen films August has directed in chronological order, arriving between To Each His Own Cinema and Night Train to Lisbon. The screenplay is by Anastassia Arnold and Peter Asmussen. Birgitte Hjort Sørensen plays Marie, with Søren Sætter-Lassen as P.S. Krøyer, Sverrir Gudnason as Hugo Alfvén, Lene Maria Christensen, Tommy Kenter and Nanna Buhl Andresen among a credited cast of twenty-six.
On TMDB the film holds a rating of 6.2 out of 10 from 25 votes, indicating a modest response from those who have rated it there.
