Three young British women on a holiday in Spain meet a group of men at a nightclub and accept an invitation to continue the party aboard a luxury yacht. Once the boat is out on open water, the drinking and drugs give way to a sexual encounter that ends with one of the women dead. With no witnesses and no easy way back to shore, the survivors turn on each other over what to do next, and the argument escalates into a violent struggle in which everyone is fighting for themselves.
Donkey Punch was released in 2008 and runs 99 minutes. It is a British production from Film4 Productions, Madman Entertainment and Warp X, directed by Olly Blackburn, who wrote the screenplay with David Bloom and produced it with Robin Gutch and Mark Herbert. The cast includes Nichola Burley, Sian Breckin, Jaime Winstone, Robert Boulter, Tom Burke and Julian Morris. It was Blackburn's first feature as director, followed by Kristy in 2014.
Audience responses split along national lines: on IMDb the film holds a 6.7 rating from 19 votes, while on TMDB it holds a 4.7 from 169 votes, a much larger sample. A film critics' rating of 5.5 from 52 reviews places it between the two audience figures, suggesting a mixed but not dismissive reception for a low-budget British thriller that moves from holiday hedonism into sustained violence.
