Clay Beresford is a wealthy young New York businessman with a failing heart who undergoes a transplant operation performed by his close friend, Dr. Jack Harper. During the surgery, Clay remains conscious but unable to move or speak, experiencing everything around him without any way to signal that he is awake. The situation grows more complicated as he becomes aware of things about the people closest to him, while his girlfriend Sam faces decisions that will shape his future.
Joby Harold wrote and directed the film, his first behind the camera. Hayden Christensen plays Clay, with Jessica Alba as Sam, Terrence Howard as the surgeon, and Lena Olin as Clay's mother. The cast also includes Christopher McDonald and Sam Robards.
Released in late 2007, the film cost around 86 million dollars and returned roughly 14 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds a 6.5 rating from about 87,000 votes, and on TMDB a 6.6 from around 1,600 votes. A critics' rating of 4.1 from 60 reviews is notably lower than those audience scores, suggesting the film drew a mixed response from professional reviewers while general viewers were somewhat more favorable.
