Short description
Eden Lake follows Jenny, a schoolteacher, and her boyfriend Steve as they leave London for a weekend at a remote lake surrounded by forest. Their plans for a quiet break are disrupted by a group of youths who camp nearby with a dog, play loud music and behave aggressively. After a confrontation, the couple finds their car keys and phones have been taken, and the situation escalates far beyond a dispute between strangers. Steve tries to stand up to the group, but the weekend turns into a struggle to survive.
The film is a British horror-thriller written and directed by James Watkins, released in 2008 and running 91 minutes. It was his first feature as director, made before The Woman in Black, Bastille Day, Speak No Evil and Clayface. Kelly Reilly plays Jenny as a primary-school teacher, and Michael Fassbender plays Steve; Jack O'Connell appears as Brett, the group's ringleader, alongside Finn Atkins, Thomas Turgoose and James Burrows. Christian Colson and Richard Holmes produced for Rollercoaster Films and Aramid Entertainment Fund.
On IMDb the film holds 6.7 out of 10 across roughly 109,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.8 out of 10 from about 2,200 votes. A critics' score of 6 out of 10 from 33 reviews places it close to those audience figures. Its worldwide box office of about 4 million dollars fell short of its reported 13 million dollar budget.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film explores the theme of the so-called moral panic surrounding “Broken Britain.” This term was used by the Conservative Party from 2007 to 2010 to describe the alleged widespread state of social decay in the country during the tenure of Labour Prime Minister Gordon Brown. (The sociological term “moral panic” describes the spread of mass hysteria in society regarding something supposedly threatening the safety of society and/or its moral values.)
- When Jenny, played by Kelly Reilly, looks in the mirror before killing Cooper (played by Thomas Turgoose), the words “The most dangerous animal of all living in the forest” can be seen in the reflection.
- Towards the end of the film, one of the gang members erases the video recordings of the crimes and acts of violence committed by the gang. The files are too small (the size of one of them, for example, is 29 KB) to be video files.
