Frida

Frida is a biographical drama about the Mexican painter Frida Kahlo. A serious accident in her youth leaves her confined to bed for long stretches, and painting becomes the way she gives shape to her dreams, her longings and her persistent pain. Once she recovers, she meets Diego Rivera, the most celebrated painter in Mexico and a man much older than she is. They fall in love, marry and build a life together that is as productive as it is turbulent, marked by affairs on both sides, by Frida's own relationships with women, and by her political commitments. The film follows the couple across the decades, including her rise to recognition in Paris and New York, and her involvement with the exiled Leon Trotsky during his time in Mexico.

Julie Taymor directed, working from a screenplay by Clancy Sigal, Diane Lake and Gregory Nava. It was her second feature, following Titus, and it precedes the three further films she has directed since. Salma Hayek Pinault plays Frida and produced the film; Alfred Molina plays Diego. Mía Maestro, Patricia Reyes Spíndola, Edward Norton and Antonio Banderas appear in supporting roles. The film was a co-production between Canada, Mexico and the United States.

Made for about 12 million US dollars, Frida took roughly 56 million worldwide, a strong return on its budget. On IMDb it holds 7.3 out of 10 from about 101,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.4 from a much smaller body of around 2,200 votes. A critics' rating of 7 out of 10 from 159 reviews is close to the audience scores.
