Brandi Boski, a young nurse's aide hoping for a promotion at the retirement home where she works, drives home after a night of drinking and drugs and hits a man on a lonely road. He goes through the windshield, and rather than call for help, she takes him back to her house and leaves him in the garage, afraid that any police involvement will cost her the job she wants. What she does not count on is that her victim, Tom Bardo, regains consciousness and begins fighting to stay alive, turning the situation into a struggle between the two of them.
Stuart Gordon directed the film, the twelfth in the run of features that began with Re-Animator in 1985 and includes From Beyond, Dolls, Robot Jox, Fortress, Castle Freak, Space Truckers, Dagon and Edmond. John Strysik wrote the screenplay, and Gordon produced with Ken Gord and Jay Firestone. Stephen Rea plays Tom Bardo and Mena Suvari plays Brandi, with Russell Hornsby, Rukiya Bernard, Carolyn Purdy-Gordon and Lionel Mark Smith in supporting roles. The production, mounted across Germany, the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States, had a budget of 5 million dollars.
Audience response has been moderate: on IMDb the film holds 6.4 out of 10 from around 11,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.2 out of 10 from roughly 200 votes. A critics' rating of 6.5 out of 10 from 89 reviews places it slightly above the audience scores, suggesting a film received somewhat more warmly by reviewers than by general viewers.
