Set in the Philippines in January 1945, The Great Raid follows a United States Army Ranger unit sent deep behind Japanese lines to free several hundred American prisoners of war held at the Cabanatuan camp. As Japanese forces withdraw and the camp commander prepares to eliminate his captives, Lieutenant Colonel Henry Mucci and his men must cross roughly thirty miles of hostile territory to reach them, relying on Filipino resistance fighters along the way. Inside the camp, a weakened officer works to keep up the prisoners' morale until help arrives.
John Dahl directed the film, the seventh in a run of features that began with Kill Me Again in 1989 and includes Red Rock West, The Last Seduction and Joy Ride. Doug Miro and Carlo Bernard wrote the screenplay, and Lawrence Bender and Marty Katz produced. Benjamin Bratt plays Mucci, with James Franco and Connie Nielsen among the principals alongside Joseph Fiennes, Logan Marshall-Green and Marton Csokas.
The production, budgeted at a reported 80 million dollars, earned about 11 million dollars worldwide, a large shortfall. Audiences rate it modestly, at 6.6/10 on IMDb from roughly 25,000 votes and 6.5/10 on TMDB from far fewer. A critics' rating of 5.6/10 from 119 reviews places it below the audience scores. It runs 132 minutes and belongs to the action, history and war genres.
