This British family comedy follows a new teacher at St Bernadette's, Donald Peterson, who is drawn into entering his school in a national Christmas song competition. Egged on by the uncontrollable classroom assistant Mr Poppy, he sets off with his pupils on a journey to the contest, accompanied by his pregnant wife Sarah. The trip brings complications for the nervous teacher, who has to cope with his own anxieties along the way. David Tennant plays the dual roles of Donald and his more confident twin brother Roderick, while Marc Wootton returns as Mr Poppy and Pam Ferris, Jessica Hynes, Joanna Page and Jason Watkins appear among the cast.
Debbie Isitt wrote and directed the film, the third feature she made after Confetti in 2006 and Nativity! in 2009. It was released in November 2012 and runs for 105 minutes.
Made for about 4 million dollars, it took roughly 14 million dollars worldwide, a return well above its cost and a stronger commercial result than its budget would suggest. Audience scores are moderate: on IMDb it holds 5.4 from around 5,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.5 from 111 votes. With a credited cast of 52, it is a modestly scaled British production aimed at family audiences around the Christmas season.
