• According to director Diane English, the project was in development for fifteen years from the first script version to the start of filming.
• The possibility of a remake was actively discussed as early as the late 1970s. At that time, the main roles were intended for Jane Fonda, Barbra Streisand, and Faye Dunaway.
• At one of the early stages of production in the mid-1990s, Meg Ryan and Julia Roberts were supposed to star in the film. The project did not move forward because both actresses wanted the same role for themselves.
• Over the following years, Sandra Bullock, Queen Latifah, Ashley Judd, Whitney Houston, and Marisa Tomei surfaced among the candidates for the lead roles in the film.
• Before the project was once again shelved in 2006, Annette Bening and Uma Thurman were actively considered for the lead roles. Anne Hathaway and Lisa Kudrow also held negotiations to appear in the film, but their roles were cut from the final script.
• Courtney Love and Anna Nicole Smith can be spotted in the scene at the restaurant.
• As in the original 1939 film, all the roles in this film are played exclusively by women.
