Short description
Mary Haines seems to have a comfortable life in Connecticut: a successful husband on Wall Street, a young daughter, and work as a fashion designer. What she does not know is that her husband is involved with Crystal Allen, a perfume counter clerk. Mary learns of the affair from a manicurist, and the story soon reaches the gossip columns, pulling her friends into the fallout. Among them is Sylvie Fowler, who edits a prominent magazine and has her own reasons for guarding her position. As Mary's marriage and her social circle come under strain, she has to decide how to handle both.
Diane English directed and wrote the film, a remake of George Cukor's 1939 comedy of the same name, and it was produced in part by Mick Jagger. Meg Ryan heads the cast as Mary, with Annette Bening as Sylvie, Debra Messing and Jada Pinkett Smith as friends Edie and Alex, Eva Mendes as Crystal, and Candice Bergen as gossip columnist Catherine Frazier. The credited cast runs to thirty-three performers. Made for 16 million dollars, it took in about 50 million worldwide.
On IMDb the film holds 5.1 out of 10 from roughly 24,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.2 out of 10 from a few hundred votes, while a critics' score of 4.1 out of 10 from 147 reviews places it below both audience results.
What's left behind the scenes
- According to director Diane English, the project was in development for fifteen years from the first script version to the start of filming.
- Before the project was once again shelved in 2006, Annette Bening and Uma Thurman were actively considered for the lead roles. Anne Hathaway and Lisa Kudrow also held negotiations to appear in the film, but their roles were cut from the final script.
- The possibility of a remake was actively discussed as early as the late 1970s. At that time, the main roles were intended for Jane Fonda, Barbra Streisand, and Faye Dunaway.
- As in the original 1939 film, all the roles in this film are played exclusively by women.
- Over the following years, Sandra Bullock, Queen Latifah, Ashley Judd, Whitney Houston, and Marisa Tomei surfaced among the candidates for the lead roles in the film.
- At one of the early stages of production in the mid-1990s, Meg Ryan and Julia Roberts were supposed to star in the film. The project did not move forward because both actresses wanted the same role for themselves.
