The Testament of Ann Lee is a historical drama centered on the life of Ann Lee, the founder of the Shaker religious movement in the 18th century. After facing persecution in England, Lee leads her followers to New York to establish a utopian community based on social and gender equality. The film depicts the development of this society, where members practiced collective ownership and expressed their faith through singing and rhythmic dancing, while Lee was revered by her disciples as a female version of Christ.
Directed by Mona Fastvold, this project is the second feature in her directorial chronology, following The World to Come and preceding Discipline. Fastvold also co-wrote the screenplay with Brady Corbet. The film stars Amanda Seyfried as Ann Lee, alongside Lewis Pullman, Thomasin McKenzie, Matthew Beard, Christopher Abbott, and Viola Prettejohn.
Produced by a collaboration of companies from the United Kingdom, Hungary, Cyprus, United States, and Sweden, the movie had a budget of 10 million USD.
