In a near-future Tokyo, most people have augmented their bodies with cybernetic parts and connect directly to vast computer networks through implanted "cyberbrains." Public Security Section 9, a government specialist unit whose officers are themselves heavily enhanced, is assigned to track down a hacker known as the Puppet Master, who can break through the protective barriers around these implants, rewrite memories and turn ordinary people into unwitting participants in crimes. Major Motoko Kusanagi leads the investigation, which unfolds amid rivalry between government departments, including Section 6, and eventually raises questions about identity and what it means to be human.
Ghost in the Shell 2.0 is a 2008 revisiting of the 1995 animated feature, directed by Mamoru Oshii and written by Kazunori Ito, with updated visual effects and audio. It sits as the ninth of thirteen films Oshii has directed, arriving after Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence and before The Sky Crawlers. The voice cast includes Atsuko Tanaka as Kusanagi, Akio Otsuka as Batou, Koichi Yamadera as Togusa, Tamio Ohki as Chief Aramaki and Tessyo Genda as Section 6's Chief Nakamura, with Masato Yamanouchi as the Foreign Minister.
The film carries an IMDb rating of 7.8 from around 16,000 votes, while its TMDB rating stands at 7.4 from roughly 474 votes, indicating a solid and fairly consistent response across both audiences, with the larger IMDb sample reflecting the title's long-standing following.
