Short description
Jack Shepard was once a superhero known as Captain Zoom, but he lost his powers and now runs an auto shop, out of shape and far from his old life. When a government agency needs help preparing a new group of young people with extraordinary abilities, Jack is asked to train them. The recruits include teenagers and children whose powers range from telekinesis to super strength and size-shifting, and who have struggled to fit in elsewhere. The assignment is to shape them into a team capable of facing a threat to the world, though Jack's enthusiasm for the job is limited.
The film is directed by Peter Hewitt, whose earlier work includes Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey, The Borrowers and Garfield; Zoom was his sixth feature and was followed by The Maiden Heist. Tim Allen plays Jack, with Courteney Cox as Dr. Marsha Holloway, Chevy Chase as Dr. Grant, and Kate Mara, Spencer Breslin and Kevin Zegers among the young cast. It was produced by Jennifer Todd, Suzanne Todd and Todd Garner from a screenplay by Adam Rifkin and David Berenbaum with J. David Stem.
Released in August 2006, Zoom had a budget of about 35 million dollars and took roughly 13 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 4.4 out of 10 from around 24,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 5.3 out of 10 from about 650 votes. A critics' rating of 3.2 out of 10 from 66 reviews places it below even the modest audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Rupert Gregson-Williams was originally slated to compose the music, but he left the project due to his commitment to the animated film "Over the Hedge" and was replaced by Christoph Beck.
- On the only photograph of the old "Zenith" superhero team, you can make out all the other members besides Tim Allen (Captain Zoom) and Kevin Zegers (Concussion). These are Alexis Bledel (Ace), Wilmer Valderrama (Marksman), and Devon Aoki (Daravia).
- The film's American theatrical release was initially scheduled for May 12, 2006, but was moved back three months (to August 11) due to a lawsuit initiated by 20th Century Fox and Marvel Comics. They believed that the film's concept and script were too similar to the "X-Men" franchise, the third film of which was also being released in May, and this could confuse audiences and, as a result, harm the box office potential of the high-budget project.
- On the cover of the DVD release of the film, including the Russian one, Captain Zoom (Tim Allen) is depicted clean-shaven and well-groomed. This is the only time he is seen like this – throughout the entire movie, he appears with a mustache and beard.
