Short description

Set in Algiers in 1938, the story follows Meursault, a reserved employee in his early thirties. After attending his mother's funeral without showing emotion, he returns to his routine and begins a casual relationship with a colleague named Marie. His predictable life is disrupted when his neighbor, Raymond Sintès, involves him in suspicious activities. This connection leads to a tragic event on a beach during a period of intense heat, resulting in a crime and a subsequent trial that focuses on Meursault's detached nature.

The film was written, produced, and directed by François Ozon, marking the 20th film of his career and following his 2024 project When Fall Is Coming. The production is a collaboration between Belgium, Morocco, and France, involving companies such as Gaumont and France 2 Cinéma. Benjamin Voisin stars as Meursault, appearing alongside Rebecca Marder, Pierre Lottin, and Denis Lavant.

The movie earned 9 million USD at the worldwide box office. It has received generally positive feedback from viewers, maintaining a 7/10 rating on IMDb from 2,400 votes and a 6.8/10 rating on TMDB from 235 votes.

What's left behind the scenes

  • At one point, François Ozon was working on a film project consisting of three novellas. One of them was about a man who had become disillusioned with life and set no goals for himself. Benjamin Voisin was cast to play him. The project never materialized, but friends advised Ozon not to abandon the idea. Shortly thereafter, he reread Albert Camus's novel "The Stranger" (1942) and decided to adapt it for the screen, making the story of the character from the unrealized project—whom Voisin was meant to play—very timely. In Ozon's film, this actor played Meursault.
  • Director, screenwriter, and producer François Ozon personally visited Catherine Camus, the daughter of Albert Camus (1913-1960, philosopher, journalist, writer, and publicist, credited as one of the screenwriters), who held the rights to all her father's works, and shared his vision for the future film. Ozon was very pleased that he was able to convince Camus and obtain permission to film, whereas other, more renowned directors had failed to do so.
