Repo! The Genetic Opera
Short description
In the year 2056, a worldwide epidemic of organ failure has killed millions. The biotech corporation GeneCo steps in, supplying replacement organs and financing the surgery through installment plans. Those who fall behind on payments find that GeneCo enforces its contracts: agents known as Repo Men are sent to take the organs back, a recovery that costs the debtor their life. Against this backdrop, a sheltered teenage girl named Shilo Wallace, who suffers from a blood disorder, uncovers unsettling truths about her father, the powerful Largo family behind GeneCo, and her own place in their world.
The film is a horror musical, with the story told largely through song. Terrance Zdunich and Darren Smith wrote the screenplay, and Darren Lynn Bousman directed. It followed the three Saw sequels he had made from 2005 to 2007 and preceded Mother's Day, which he directed in 2010. Alexa PenaVega plays Shilo, with Paul Sorvino as GeneCo head Rotti Largo, Anthony Stewart Head as her father Nathan Wallace, Sarah Brightman as the singer Blind Mag, Paris Hilton as Amber Sweet and Bill Moseley as Luigi Largo. The production, backed by Twisted Pictures, Mandate Pictures and Lionsgate, was made for about 9 million dollars.
Released in November 2008, the film runs 98 minutes. Its critical reception was poor, with a critics' rating of 4.7 out of 10 across 60 reviews, while audiences have been warmer: 6.4 out of 10 on IMDb from around 28,000 votes and 6.3 out of 10 on TMDB from roughly 396 votes. That gap suggests a film that did not win over reviewers but found a more favorable response among viewers drawn to its unusual mix of science fiction, horror and music.

- Darren Lynn Bousman cast Anthony Head as The Confessor after being impressed by his performance in 'Once More, with Feeling' from the musical 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer'.
- Darren Lynn Bousman spent several years trying to get permission to film the musical. Eventually, he, Terrence Zdunich, and Darren Smith gathered a small group of actors and filmed a ten-minute film, with which they finally managed to interest producers.
- In the original stage productions, The Confiscator wore a wide-brimmed hat instead of a helmet, Blind Meg was African American, and Largo’s daughter was named Heather.
- In the scene where Pavi first appears, the face worn on him is actually a cast of Darren Lynn Bousman’s girlfriend’s face.
