Doctor Who: The Waters of Mars is a feature-length special set on a human outpost on Mars in the year 2059. Led by Captain Adelaide Brooke, the base's crew falls victim to a mysterious organism that spreads through water and takes control of those it infects. The Doctor finds himself at the centre of the unfolding disaster while aware that something larger awaits, and he faces a dilemma over whether to intervene in events he knows are meant to run their course, since the colony's fate carries consequences for humanity's future.
The special was directed by Graeme Harper, continuing a long association with the programme that stretches back to its classic era, and written by Russell T Davies with Phil Ford. Nikki Wilson produced it for BBC Wales. It airs as an extra-length instalment between the fourth and fifth series of the revived show, following the same production team and lead actor as that period.
David Tennant plays the Doctor, with Lindsay Duncan as Captain Adelaide Brooke. The supporting cast includes Peter O'Brien, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Gemma Chan and Aleksandar Mikic as members of the colony. On TMDB it holds a rating of 7.9 from around 240 votes, a solid score for a television special.
