Black Beauty tells the life story of a handsome black horse, from his birth in the English countryside through the many hands he passes into. Narrated by the horse himself, the film follows him as he moves between kind and cruel owners, shifts from a carefree youth to hard work in the streets of London, and encounters both friendship and hardship along the way. Adapted from Anna Sewell's 1877 novel, the story unfolds across nineteenth-century England and presents the world as seen through the eyes of the animal at its centre.
Caroline Thompson directed and wrote the screenplay, making her feature directing debut. She had previously worked as a screenwriter. Alan Cumming provides the voice of Black Beauty, while the horse itself is played by Docs Keepin Time. The cast includes Sean Bean as Farmer Grey, David Thewlis as Jerry Barker, Jim Carter as John Manly and Peter Davison as Squire Gordon, among 22 credited performers. Produced by Warner Bros. Pictures as a British-American co-production, the film runs 88 minutes.
On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.6 from around 11,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.7 from roughly 355 votes. A critics' rating of 6.6 from 19 reviews places it broadly in line with how general audiences have received it, suggesting a modest but consistent response across both groups.
