The 100 Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared

Allan Karlsson has reached his hundredth birthday in a nursing home, and the celebration being prepared for him holds no appeal. He climbs out of his window and walks off toward the bus station, still in his slippers, with no particular destination in mind. An unattended suitcase at the station soon gives his journey a direction he did not choose, and a collection of strangers, small-time crooks and worse fall in behind him. Allan takes the disruption calmly, because his past has been far stranger: over the previous century he repeatedly found himself near people who shaped world affairs, and his own presence left marks he never intended.

Felix Herngren directed and co-wrote the film with Hans Ingemansson, and it was his first feature as director, followed by a sequel in 2016. Robert Gustafsson plays Allan, with Iwar Wiklander, David Wiberg, Mia Skäringer, Jens Hultén and Sven Lönn among the credited cast of 27. Made for about 9 million US dollars, the Swedish production, shot with backing from several European countries, returned roughly 51 million US dollars worldwide.

On TMDB the film holds a rating of 6.8 out of 10 from more than a thousand votes, while the critics' rating stands at 6 out of 10 from 80 reviews, so audiences there have been somewhat warmer toward it than reviewers. It runs 115 minutes and mixes adventure, comedy and drama.
