Foolproof

Kevin, Sam and Rob are friends who share an unusual pastime: designing elaborate, seemingly flawless robbery plans purely for the challenge, with no intention of ever carrying them out. Their hobby turns dangerous when a career criminal named Leo Gillette gets hold of one of their schemes and uses it for a real jewel theft. He then blackmails the trio, threatening to expose them as accomplices unless they design another job for him. What began as an intellectual game becomes a matter of survival, since pulling off the plan is only part of the problem.

William Phillips wrote and directed the film, which followed his debut Treed Murray and preceded Gunless in his directing career. Ryan Reynolds plays Kevin, with Kristin Booth as Sam, Joris Jarsky as Rob and David Suchet as Leo Gillette; David Hewlett and James Allodi appear in supporting roles. The Canadian production, made for about 8 million dollars, runs 94 minutes.

Released in October 2003, Foolproof has drawn moderate audience scores: on IMDb it holds 6.4/10 from roughly 12,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.1/10 from a much smaller group of around 200 voters. The larger IMDb sample suggests a reasonably steady, if unspectacular, level of approval for this action thriller.
