Air Mater is a short animated film in which Mater, the tow truck from Radiator Springs, becomes convinced he can learn to fly. His attempts lead him into the company of a group of elite flying vehicles and, eventually, into a large airshow, where his stunt work puts him in need of rescue.
The film is a Pixar production made with Pixar Canada, running six minutes, and belongs to the Cars Toons series of shorts spun off from the Cars features. Rob Gibbs directed, following earlier shorts in the series including Mater's Tall Tales, Tokyo Mater and Moon Mater, and before later ones such as Time Travel Mater. The screenplay is credited to John Lasseter, Jim Capobianco and Rob Gibbs, with Kimberly Adams producing. Larry the Cable Guy voices Mater, Keith Ferguson voices Lightning McQueen, and Stacy Keach voices Skipper, with Jonathan Adams and Lindsey Collins also in the voice cast.
Released in August 2011, the short drew modest scores from viewers: on IMDb it holds 5.6 out of 10 from around two hundred votes, and on TMDB 6.1 out of 10 from a similar number, suggesting a small audience and a mixed-to-average reception rather than a widely praised entry in the series.
