Short description
Gia is a 1998 television drama based on the life of Gia Carangi, a young woman from Philadelphia who moves to New York at seventeen and quickly becomes one of the most sought-after fashion models of the late 1970s. Wilhelmina Cooper takes her on, and her willingness to pose nude helps turn her into a star. Alongside her rapid success, she begins a relationship with Linda, a makeup artist whose uncertainty about her own bisexuality leaves Gia increasingly isolated. Loneliness and heavy drug use take hold as her career declines, and her life ends in 1986.
Michael Cristofer directs and shares screenplay credit with Jay McInerney. It was the first feature Cristofer directed, followed by Body Shots, Original Sin, The Night Clerk and The Great Lillian Hall. Angelina Jolie plays Gia, with Elizabeth Mitchell as Linda, Eric Michael Cole as T.J., Kylie Travis as Stephanie, Louis Giambalvo as Joe Carangi and John Considine as Bruce Cooper. The production was made for HBO Films and runs two hours; the credited cast totals 66.
On IMDb the film holds 6.9 out of 10 from around 54,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 7.1 out of 10 from roughly 854 votes. A critics' rating of 7 out of 10 across 16 reviews places it slightly above the IMDb audience figure and broadly in line with the TMDB score.
