Four psychiatric patients are taken to New York by their psychiatrist, who believes a trip away from the institution can be part of their therapy. After a mix-up in the city, the doctor is hurt and ends up hospitalized in a coma, leaving his patients on their own. The men are a difficult group: Billy is a compulsive liar prone to panic, Henry is a fussy, aggressive patient, Jack believes he is Christ, and Albert is withdrawn and barely responsive. When it turns out their doctor was the only witness to a murder, the four have to stay free of the killers and work together long enough to help him. Much of the film follows their attempts to cope with the city without supervision.
Howard Zieff directed the film, his second of four, following Private Benjamin (1980) and preceding My Girl (1991) and My Girl 2 (1994). Jon Connolly and David Loucka wrote the screenplay, and Christopher W. Knight produced. Michael Keaton, Christopher Lloyd, Peter Boyle, Stephen Furst, Dennis Boutsikaris and Lorraine Bracco lead a credited cast of twenty.
The film was released in April 1989 and runs 113 minutes. Made for 15 million USD, it took about 29 million USD worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.5/10 from 17,000 votes and on TMDB 6.1/10 from 264 votes, while a critics' rating of 5.7/10 from 16 reviews sits below the audience scores.
