Passchendaele
Short description
Passchendaele is a Canadian war drama set during the First World War. Sergeant Michael Dunne is wounded while serving on the Western Front in Europe and sent home to Canada to recover. In hospital he meets Sarah, a nurse, and the two begin a relationship. When Sarah's younger brother David, who has asthma, enlists and is sent overseas, Michael returns to the front to watch over him. Both are drawn into the Third Battle of Ypres, known as Passchendaele, fought in the waterlogged mud of Flanders in 1917.
The film is directed by Paul Gross, who also wrote the screenplay, produced it and plays Michael Dunne. It was the first feature he directed, followed by Hyena Road in 2015. Caroline Dhavernas plays Sarah Mann, Joe Dinicol plays her brother David, and the cast also includes Meredith Bailey, Adam J. Harrington and Gil Bellows. It was made for a budget of 20 million USD and runs 114 minutes.
On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.4 from about 9,200 votes, and on TMDB 6.1 from 123 votes. A critics' rating of 5.1 from 14 reviews places it below the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Filming began on August 20, 2007, and took place in Calgary (Alberta province), Fort Macleod, at the Suffield military base in Alberta, and in Belgium. Principal photography began in Calgary and lasted forty-five days. More than 200 actors were involved, including Canadian soldiers with combat experience gained in Afghanistan. Battle scenes were filmed in October 2007 in the Tsuu T'ina Indian reservation on the outskirts of Calgary.
