Vitus is a Swiss drama about a boy of exceptional ability. He has an extraordinary ear, plays piano with uncommon skill and absorbs knowledge faster than anyone around him. His parents see his gifts as the foundation of a great career and push him toward becoming a concert pianist, while Vitus would rather spend time in his grandfather's workshop, dream about flying and have an ordinary childhood. The tension between what his parents want and what he wants comes to a head as he decides to take charge of his own life.
Fredi M. Murer directed the film and co-wrote the screenplay with Peter Luisi and Lukas B. Suter. It was released in 2006 and runs 120 minutes. The title role is split between Fabrizio Borsani as the six-year-old Vitus and Teo Gheorghiu, a piano prodigy, as the twelve-year-old. Julika Jenkins and Urs Jucker play his parents, while Bruno Ganz plays his grandfather and Eleni Haupt appears as Luisa.
The film was made for about 3 million dollars and took roughly 6 million worldwide, a solid return for a Swiss production of its size. On IMDb it holds 7.6/10 from around 5,400 votes, and on TMDB it has 7.4/10 from a much smaller pool of votes.
