La Vie en Rose
Short description
La Vie en Rose traces the life of French singer Edith Piaf, from a childhood spent in poverty in the Belleville district of Paris to international fame and the concert stages of New York. The film follows her struggle to survive, to sing and to love, and does not shy away from the illness and drug addiction that marked her later years. Her rise began in 1935, when nightclub owner Louis Leplée encouraged her to perform despite her severe stage fright. Along the way she formed friendships and romances with prominent figures of her time, including Jean Cocteau, Marlene Dietrich and Marcel Cerdan.
Olivier Dahan directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Isabelle Sobelman. Dahan's earlier film was Crimson Rivers II: Angels of the Apocalypse (2004), and after this one he went on to make Grace of Monaco (2014) and Simone: Woman of the Century (2022). Marion Cotillard plays Piaf, heading a cast that includes Sylvie Testud, Pascal Greggory, Emmanuelle Seigner, Jean-Paul Rouve and Gérard Depardieu as Leplée.
Produced by Alain Goldman, the film had a budget of about 25 million USD and took roughly 86 million USD worldwide. On IMDb it rates 7.5/10 from around 94,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.4/10 from about 1,774 votes. A critics' rating of 7.3/10 from 151 reviews places it close to the audience scores.

- In a number of countries – the Czech Republic, Israel, Poland, and Finland – they preferred to put Édith Piaf's name in the film's title. And in Hungary, the film was released under the title “Piaf”.

- Marion Cotillard, who played Piaf, had to make significant sacrifices to achieve a closer resemblance to her character. For instance, she had to cut her hair and shave her eyebrows, which were later drawn on with a pencil. Furthermore, for the makeup in the final part, where she had to portray an aging Piaf, Cotillard spent up to five hours a day in the makeup chair.
- Marguerite Monnot, the singer’s friend and composer, could not attend her last concert at the Olympia – as she had died two years earlier, in 1961.
