Set in late medieval Paris, this drama follows the life of Quasimodo, the deformed bell ringer of Notre Dame. He develops a deep, unrequited love for a gypsy woman named Esmeralda. This affection puts him in conflict with the cathedral's archdeacon, Claude Frollo, who is also drawn to her. As Frollo struggles between his religious devotion and his desire for Esmeralda, he eventually attempts to destroy her, leading Quasimodo to risk his own life to protect her.
The film was directed by Peter Medak, appearing after his work on Romeo Is Bleeding and before Species II. It features a cast including Mandy Patinkin as Quasimodo, Salma Hayek Pinault as Esmeralda, and Richard Harris as Dom Frollo, with supporting roles played by Edward Atterton, Benedick Blythe, and Nigel Terry. Produced by Stéphane Reichel through Alliance Films, Turner Pictures, and Adelson-Baumgarten Productions, this television movie was a joint effort between Hungary, the United States, France, and the Czech Republic.
Audience reception was mixed, with the film receiving a 6.2 rating on IMDb from 2,000 votes and a slightly lower score of 5.9 on TMDB based on 50 votes.
