Short description

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra follows an elite international special forces unit that relies on advanced spy and military technology to take on a powerful arms dealer and a secretive terrorist organization. When a weapons shipment carrying dangerous warheads falls under attack, two soldiers are drawn into the world of the G.I. Joe team and its mission to stop the arms trade from being used to threaten governments around the world.

Stephen Sommers directed the film, which sits between Van Helsing and Odd Thomas in his filmography. The screenplay was written by Stuart Beattie, David Elliot and Paul Lovett, and the cast includes Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Christopher Eccleston, Lee Byung-hun, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Sienna Miller and Rachel Nichols. It was produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Bob Ducsay and Brian Goldner, with 47 credited cast members and 181 credited crew.

Released in 2009, the film runs 118 minutes and was made on a budget of 175 million US dollars, going on to earn about 303 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.7 from roughly 221,000 votes, and on TMDB a rating of 5.8 from about 5,000 votes. A film critics' rating of 4.5 from 166 reviews places it below both audience scores.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Skip Woods wrote an early version of the script featuring Alex Mann and his wife Scarlett. Ryan was supposed to be the main villain.
  • The film was shot almost without a script, and the director had to come up with everything on the fly due to the tight deadlines the studio allocated for filming.
  • To prepare for the role of the Baroness, Sienna Miller trained intensely for four months, gaining five pounds (about two kilograms) of muscle mass.
  • Lorenzo di Bonaventura initially wanted Mark Wahlberg to play Duke.
  • Common was offered the role of Roadblock, Heavy Duty's cousin. He declined. Later, the roles of Heavy Duty and his cousin were rewritten, merging them into one character.
  • The set for filming the pulse cannon based on the Cobra was as tall as a five-story building.
  • Sam Worthington was considered for the role of Duke.
  • Joseph Gordon-Levitt tried to replicate the speech mannerisms and voice of Chris Latta from G.I. Joe (1984) for his character, but mostly he used his imagination in creating the character.
  • All scenes featuring Dennis Quaid were filmed in the first two months of shooting.
  • Action scenes set on the streets of Paris were filmed in Prague.
  • Dennis Quaid agreed to play General Hawk at the insistence of his son, who is a big fan of G.I. Joe.
  • Stephen Sommers wrote a screenplay for a film about power suits 20 years ago, but no one bought it at the time. He was able to realize his idea in "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra".
  • Initially, Channing Tatum declined the offer to star in the film because he believed it glorified war. However, after reading the script, he changed his mind, as he saw the film more as a fantastical action thriller rather than a war movie.
  • Filming lasted 82 days instead of the planned 95 days.
  • The design of the Cobra Commander's mask was significantly altered because the 1985 version too closely resembled the masks of the Ku Klux Klan.
  • Ray Park, who played Snake Eyes, trained in wushu and studied the character through numerous G.I. Joe comics and television series in preparation for the role.
  • The filmmakers enjoyed working with Dennis Quaid so much that they specifically added about 10-15 scenes to the film for him.
  • Larry Hama, the creator of G.I. Joe (1984), was hired as a consultant.
  • David Murray was originally intended to play Destro.
  • Rachel Nichols was the producers' initial choice for the role of Scarlett O'Hara.
  • In 2003, Don Murphy was supposed to produce a film, but he reached an agreement with Hasbro to produce Transformers (2007).
  • Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, friends in real life, played sworn enemies – Duke and Cobra Commander.
