Short description
Lauryn travels from Indiana to Chicago with the goal of attending a prestigious school of music and dance. After failing her entrance audition, she begins working at a burlesque club. In this unconventional environment, she discovers a new style of dance and learns to adapt her plans while pursuing her ambitions. Her journey involves personal discovery and conflict with her overprotective brother, who is unhappy with her new career path and relationship.
Directed by Darren Grant, this 2008 production followed his 2005 film Diary of a Mad Black Woman and preceded Killing Hasselhoff in 2017. The cast features Mary Elizabeth Winstead in the lead role as Lauryn Kirk, alongside Riley Smith, John Reardon, Tessa Thompson, Ashley Roberts, and Julissa Bermudez. The film was produced by The Mayhem Project and written by Duane Adler and Nicole Avril.
Audience reception was mixed but generally more positive than the response from professional critics. On IMDb, the film holds a rating of 5.4/10 based on 6,600 votes, while on TMDB it has a score of 6/10 from 309 votes. In comparison, film critics gave the movie a lower rating of 4.5/10 based on 17 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- The umbrella dance was originally planned to be filmed with water pouring down, as during a rainstorm, and the girls were supposed to dance in the water. However, due to the risk of falls, this idea was abandoned.
- During post-production, two storylines were removed from the film (they remained in the DVD and Blu-ray versions). One involved Dana becoming pregnant and then suffering a miscarriage, which explains how Lauren ended up in third place and the lack of complaints from Dana. Brooke was supposed to have more lines regarding the audition. In the end, she was left with only two lines.
