Proof

Martin is a blind photographer living in Australia. He has never trusted the way sighted people describe the world to him, so he takes photographs and asks others to tell him what the pictures show, using their words as a test of whether they tell him the truth. He depends on Celia, a woman who has long loved him and whom he keeps at a distance, treating her with a cruelty she answers in kind. When he meets Andy, who works in a restaurant, the two men form a friendship built on Andy's frank and imaginative way of dealing with Martin's blindness. Celia grows jealous of the bond and sets out to come between them.

Jocelyn Moorhouse wrote and directed the film, her first feature after the short The Siege of Barton's Bathroom. Hugo Weaving plays Martin, Russell Crowe plays Andy, Geneviève Picot plays Celia, and Heather Mitchell appears as Martin's mother. Lynda House produced, and the film was made in Australia with backing from Film Victoria, the Australian Film Commission, Fine Line Features and House & Moorhouse Films.

Proof was released in August 1991 and runs 90 minutes. It took about 2 million dollars at the worldwide box office, a modest return for a small drama. On IMDb it holds a critics' rating of 8 out of 10 from 17 reviews, while on TMDB it sits at 6.7 out of 10 from 114 votes, a gap suggesting that reviewers responded more strongly to the film than general viewers did.
