Barbie of Swan Lake is an animated family film in which Barbie tells a fairy tale to a restless child at summer camp. The story follows Odette, a baker's daughter, who chases a unicorn into an enchanted forest. There the sorcerer Rothbart turns her into a swan, part of his campaign against the Fairy Queen and his bid to control the forest. The Fairy Queen cannot undo the spell entirely but softens it: Odette is human again at night and a swan by day. The forest's other enchanted inhabitants look to her for deliverance, and Prince Daniel's affection may matter as much as her courage and quick wits.
The film is a loose adaptation of the Swan Lake story that uses Tchaikovsky's music. Owen Hurley directed it, the fourth title in the chronological list of his directing credits after Casper's Haunted Christmas, Barbie in the Nutcracker and Barbie as Rapunzel. Elana Lesser and Cliff Ruby wrote the screenplay, and Jesyca C. Durchin and Jennifer Twiner McCarron produced. Kelly Sheridan voices both Barbie and Odette, with Mark Hildreth as Prince Daniel, Kelsey Grammer as Rothbart, Maggie Wheeler as Odile, Venus Terzo as Lila and Kathleen Barr as the Fairy Queen and Marie, among twenty credited cast members.
It runs 83 minutes and was released on September 27, 2003, produced by Mattel and Mainframe Entertainment in Canada and the United States. On IMDb it holds 6.6 out of 10 from about 9,200 votes, and on TMDB 7 out of 10 from roughly 1,160 votes, a modest but consistent reception.
