Short description

Abe Holt, an insurance investigator, travels to a small, snow-covered town in Minnesota to look into a claim resulting from a fatal car accident. The deceased is Kelvin Anderson, a con man, and a million-dollar life insurance policy has been taken out in his name. The beneficiaries are his sister Isold and her husband Fred, who live with their son in an isolated house. From the start, Holt is uneasy about the case. What appears to be a straightforward check on a body becomes a contest of wits between the investigator and the couple, and the line between the two sides begins to blur.

Baltasar Kormákur directed and wrote the film, and produced it with Sigurjón Sighvatsson. It was his second feature, following The Sea in 2002 and preceding White Night Wedding in 2008. Forest Whitaker plays Holt, with Julia Stiles as Isold, Jeremy Renner as Fred, Peter Coyote as Frank, Iddo Goldberg as Russle and Joanna Scanlan as Josie. The film runs 98 minutes and was made for about 12 million dollars.

It was released in December 2005. On TMDB it holds a rating of 5.4 out of 10 from 89 votes, which suggests a modest response from those who have seen it.
