Ain't Them Bodies Saints

In 1970s Texas, Bob Muldoon and Ruth Guthrie are young lovers and partners in crime. When a shootout with lawmen ends their spree, Ruth wounds a local officer, but Bob claims the shot was his and goes to prison. Ruth, pregnant at the time of his arrest, gives birth to a daughter, Sylvie, while Bob is behind bars. He dreams of the family he has never met, and after four years he escapes and makes his way across Texas toward Ruth and the child. His return is complicated by Patrick Wheeler, the officer Ruth shot, who has grown close to her, by her adoptive father Skerritt, and by others with old grievances against Bob. Ruth has built a settled life as a mother and must weigh the past against the future.

The film is the first feature directed by David Lowery, who also wrote the screenplay; among the features he directed afterward are Pete's Dragon, A Ghost Story, The Old Man & the Gun, The Green Knight and Peter Pan & Wendy. Rooney Mara plays Ruth and Casey Affleck plays Bob, with Ben Foster as Wheeler, Keith Carradine as Skerritt, and Kennadie Smith and Jacklynn Smith sharing the role of Sylvie. Produced by Amy Kaufman, Cassian Elwes and Lars Knudsen, it runs 96 minutes.
