Tender Dracula

Two writers and their partners travel to the castle of MacGregor, a performer known for his vampire roles. What begins as a visit meant to settle a professional matter turns strange as the night wears on, and the guests find themselves unable to decide whether their host is simply an actor inhabiting a part or something altogether different from what he appears to be. The uncertainty is the core of the film, which blends fantasy and horror with a comic tone.

Tender Dracula, originally titled La Grande Trouille, is a French production released in 1974 and running 98 minutes. It was directed by Pierre Grunstein from a screenplay by Justin Lenoir, with Christian Fechner, Claude Berri and Vincent Malle among the producers. Peter Cushing plays MacGregor, heading a cast that includes Alida Valli, Bernard Ménez, Miou-Miou, Nathalie Courval and Stéphane Shandor. The film places a veteran horror performer at the centre of a story that plays on the line between the roles an actor takes on and the person behind them.

Audience response has been modest: on IMDb it holds 3.9 out of 10 from around 350 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 4.2 out of 10 from a much smaller number of votes. Both figures point to a film that found little favour with viewers, and the limited vote counts suggest a title with a narrow following.
