Joe

Joe Ransom is an ex-convict who keeps to himself in a small Southern town, running a lumber crew by day and drinking away his evenings. His routine is interrupted when he meets Gary, a fifteen-year-old looking for work to support his mother and sister and to escape a home dominated by an alcoholic, violent father. Joe takes the boy on, and the two form an unlikely bond that pulls Joe back toward the kind of trouble he has been trying to avoid.

David Gordon Green directed the film, the sixth of fourteen features he has made, following Prince Avalanche and preceding Our Brand Is Crisis. Gary Hawkins wrote the screenplay, and Lisa Muskat, Green and Derrick Tseng produced. Nicolas Cage plays Joe Ransom, with Tye Sheridan as Gary; the cast also includes Gary Poulter as Wade, Ronnie Gene Blevins, Sue Rock and Heather Kafka, among twenty-two credited performers.

Made for about four million dollars, the film earned roughly half that amount worldwide. On IMDb it holds a 6.8 rating from around 53,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.5 from about a thousand votes. The critics' rating stands at 7.3 from 134 reviews, placing it above both audience scores.
