Short description
Maps to the Stars follows two Hollywood households whose lives become entangled. Dr. Stafford Weiss is a celebrity therapist with a bestselling self-help career, a wife who manages their thirteen-year-old son Benjie, a former television star fresh out of rehab, and an estranged daughter, Agatha, who has just left a psychiatric facility and returns to Los Angeles scarred and unannounced. Agatha becomes the personal assistant to Stafford's client Havana Segrand, an ageing actress fixated on playing the role that made her mother famous in a remake, while also growing close to Jerome Fontana, a limousine driver with his own ambitions. Across these overlapping circles, the characters chase recognition and confront the ghosts of their pasts.
This is the twentieth of twenty-two films directed by David Cronenberg, arriving between Cosmopolis and Crimes of the Future, from a screenplay by Bruce Wagner. Julianne Moore plays Havana, Mia Wasikowska plays Agatha, Robert Pattinson plays Jerome, and John Cusack, Evan Bird and Olivia Williams play the Weiss family. Thirty-nine cast members and seventy-seven crew are credited.
Made for a budget of 15 million dollars, the film took about 5 million dollars worldwide, a small return on its production cost. It holds a rating of 6.2 out of 10 on IMDb from roughly 45,000 votes and 6.2 out of 10 on TMDB from around 1,200 votes, while critics rated it 6.6 out of 10 across 163 reviews, slightly above the audience scores on both sites.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film was shot over five days in Los Angeles and Beverly Hills and over 24 days in Toronto, the hometown of director David Cronenberg.
- Viggo Mortensen and Rachel Weisz were considered for the roles of Dr. Stafford and Havana Segrand, but both left the project due to scheduling conflicts. John Cusack and Julianne Moore eventually took on the roles.
- Writer and screenwriter Bruce Wagner appeared in the film in a cameo role as a bald driver in dark glasses and a black suit, who stands in the background while Benji insults Arnold in front of the children's hospital. Notably, Wagner worked as a limousine driver before becoming a famous writer.
- The award that Agatha hits Havana with is a Genie Award, a Canadian award for cinematic achievement that existed until 2012. The film's director, David Cronenberg, won this award five times.
- At the beginning of the film, in the car scene, the view outside the window changes abruptly with each cut, alternating between the driver and the passenger.
