Melancholie der Engel

Set in Germany, this horror and mystery film centres on two men, Brauth and Katze, who once shared a dark secret and reunite at an isolated country house after one of them learns he has little time left. They are joined there by three women and by an elderly man with his companion. Cut off from the outside world, the group sinks into excess, cruelty and violence, and the gathering builds toward a fatal turn in which the bleakest sides of human nature surface. Marian Dora directed and wrote the screenplay with Carsten Frank; Georg Treml produced it for Authentic Film. Zenza Raggi plays Brauth, Carsten Frank plays Katze, and the cast also includes Janette Weller, Bianca Schneider, Patrizia Johann and Pietro Martellanza.

The film runs 164 minutes and was released in 2009. It is the first of the two features Dora is credited with directing, ahead of White Gardenia: The King James Bible. Audiences have responded to it very negatively: on IMDb it holds a rating of 3.2 out of 10 from around 1,800 votes, and on TMDB it stands at 3.9 out of 10 from a much smaller pool of 59 votes. The two figures point to the same reception, with a low score from a comparatively large sample on IMDb and a similar verdict from a handful of users elsewhere.
