Raymond Yale is a construction worker stuck in a marriage that has lost its warmth. He begins an affair with Carla, the woman next door, and their relationship draws him toward a life he never expected. Carla's husband Greg is a criminal who keeps a large sum of drug money at home, and Carla proposes that she and Ray take the cash and burn the house down so Greg will believe it was destroyed in the fire. Ray hires Billy, a professional arsonist, to carry out the burning, but the plan goes wrong.
Nash Edgerton directed The Square, which followed his 2004 short Fuel and preceded Gringo and Candy Bar in his filmography. The screenplay is by Joel Edgerton and Matthew Dabner, with Louise Smith producing. David Roberts plays Raymond, Claire van der Boom plays Carla, Joel Edgerton plays Billy, and Anthony Hayes plays Greg, alongside Hanna Mangan Lawrence and Peter Phelps. The Australian crime thriller runs 105 minutes.
Released in 2008, the film holds a 6.7 rating on IMDb from roughly 6,700 votes and a 6.2 on TMDB from a much smaller base of 113 votes. A critics' rating of 7.4 from 85 reviews places it above both audience scores.
