When Pollyanna, a young orphan raised by missionary parents, arrives in a small American town to live with her wealthy Aunt Polly, she finds a household and a community governed by strict rules and long-held resentments. Her aunt, a stern woman who holds considerable influence over the town, has little patience for the girl's cheerfulness. Pollyanna copes through a game her father taught her, in which any situation, however bleak, must be met by finding something to be glad about. She plays it with everyone she meets, from the town's lonely recluse to its fretful residents, and the habit gradually spreads beyond her.
The film is based on Eleanor H. Porter's 1913 novel. David Swift wrote and directed it for Walt Disney Productions, and it was the first film he directed, ahead of The Parent Trap and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. Hayley Mills plays Pollyanna, with Jane Wyman as Aunt Polly, Richard Egan, Karl Malden, Nancy Olson and Adolphe Menjou among a credited cast of forty. Produced for about three million dollars, it returned roughly four million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.4 from around 12,000 votes, on TMDB 7 from 219 votes, and critics gave it 7.3 from thirteen reviews.
