Blue Jasmine
Short description
Blue Jasmine follows a New York socialite whose life collapses after her husband's business dealings come to light. Stripped of her wealth and standing, she moves into her adopted sister's cramped San Francisco apartment and tries to build a new life. Haunted by memories and mounting anxiety, she struggles to adjust to a world where she has no profession, no money and no clear way forward, while her sister's modest circumstances and choice of partner clash with the standards she once took for granted. Cate Blanchett plays Jasmine, with Sally Hawkins as Ginger, Alec Baldwin as her husband Hal, Peter Sarsgaard as Dwight, Bobby Cannavale as Chili and Andrew Dice Clay as Augie.
The film was written and directed by Woody Allen, released in August 2013. It is the forty-first of the forty-eight features he has directed in chronological order, arriving between To Rome with Love and Magic in the Moonlight. It was produced by Letty Aronson, Stephen Tenenbaum and Edward Walson, and runs 99 minutes.
Made for a modest 18 million dollars, the film earned close to 99 million worldwide, a strong return on its budget. On IMDb it holds 7.3 out of 10 from around 220,000 votes, and on TMDB 7 out of 10 from roughly 3,700 votes. A critics' score of 8.1 out of 10 from 231 reviews places it well above those audience ratings.

- Bradley Cooper was considered for a role in this film, but declined due to scheduling conflicts.
- Louis C.K. originally auditioned for the role played by Andrew Dice Clay. Woody Allen found Louis too endearing for the part and offered him another.
- The film was released in the US in limited release in six cinemas in New York and Los Angeles, grossing $612,767 in its first three days, thereby setting a box office record among Woody Allen's films.
- Of all the actors, only Kate Blanchett and Sally Hawkins had a complete script in hand during filming.
- The costume designer, Susie Benzinger, had a budget of only $35,000. Just one Hermes bag worn by Jasmine cost more than that entire amount. As a result, it was borrowed for the duration of filming, as were most of the designer outfits.
- The first Woody Allen film in which two main American characters are played by non-native Americans (Australian Kate Blanchett and British Sally Hawkins).
- When the women are in the garden at Chili's, Ginger's legs change position between shots. They are sometimes crossed and sometimes not.
- During an argument between Jasmine and Dwight in the car, it can be noticed that her shoulder seatbelt is turned in a different direction after a shot change.
- When Hal is in the kitchen after the birthday party, Jasmine tells him about Raylin. At that moment, an open bottle of wine is visible on the table, but when Jasmine walks into the room to get more wine in the next shot, the same bottle is in her hands.
- This is Woody Allen's third film to use a widescreen anamorphic format (2.35:1) (the first being "Manhattan" in 1979, and the second, "Something's Gotta Give" in 2003). Unlike previous films that used anamorphic lenses, this film was shot using spherical optics in "Super-35" format.
- The film's plot is similar to Tennessee Williams' famous American play "A Streetcar Named Desire."
