Carnival of Souls

A car carrying three young women plunges off a bridge into a river. Only Mary Henry surfaces alive, dazed and apparently unharmed, with no clear memory of what happened. She leaves her old life behind and travels to Utah to take a job as the organist at a church in Salt Lake City.

Her fresh start does not hold. Mary begins to see a pale, menacing figure that no one else notices, and she finds herself drawn to an abandoned amusement park at the edge of town, a place that seems to have a hold on her. As the apparitions grow more frequent, the line between the living and the dead becomes harder for her to keep straight.

Herk Harvey directed and produced this low-budget independent horror film, working from a screenplay by John Clifford, with a cast of 23 credited performers led by Candace Hilligoss as Mary, Sidney Berger as John Linden and the director himself as the man who haunts her. It was Harvey's first feature as director. On IMDb it holds a 7 out of 10 from around 31,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.9 out of 10 from roughly 550 votes. A film critics' rating of 7.3 out of 10 from 67 reviews places it slightly above the audience scores on both sites.
