Sunny is barely scraping by in the Bollywood industry, and his attempts to become an actor keep falling short. He takes work as an assistant director for an American documentary crew shooting in Rajasthan, and during the production he is kidnapped by Pakistani terrorists and held in a small village in Pakistan. What follows turns on a shared love of cinema: the villagers are as devoted to Bollywood films as Sunny is, and captor and captive gradually come to see each other differently. Sunny eventually works out a plan to get away with the villagers' help.
Filmistaan is a 2014 Indian comedy written and directed by Nitin Kakkar, running 117 minutes. It was the first feature he directed, ahead of Jawaani Jaaneman and Ram Singh Charlie in 2020 and Awarapan 2 in 2026. Sharib Hashmi plays Sunny, with Kumud Mishra as Mehmood, Gopal Datt as Jawaad and Inaamulhaq as Aftab.
More than a decade after its release, the film holds a 7.3 rating on IMDb from roughly 3,800 votes, a solid score backed by a meaningful number of viewers. On TMDB it sits at 6.7 from a much smaller sample of 18 votes, so that figure reflects far fewer responses and is less indicative of wider opinion.
