Carmen Colson and her husband Wayne, a metalworker in Michigan, lead a quiet life until they accidentally cross paths with two criminals: Armand "The Blackbird" Degas, a seasoned contract killer, and Richie Nix, a reckless young hustler. After the couple witnesses the men's attempt at extortion, they are placed in the Federal Witness Protection program and given new identities and a new home. Staying out of reach proves difficult, as the two killers keep pursuing the witnesses who can identify them.

John Madden directed the film, the eighth of the fourteen features he has made in chronological order, following Proof and preceding The Debt. Hossein Amini wrote the screenplay, and Lawrence Bender, Richard N. Gladstein and James Powers produced. Diane Lane and Thomas Jane play Carmen and Wayne, with Mickey Rourke as Degas, Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Nix, Rosario Dawson as Donna and Lois Smith as Lenore, among a credited cast of thirty-four. The film was released in November 2008 and took in about 3 million dollars worldwide, a modest return. On IMDb it holds 6 out of 10 from roughly 23,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 5.8 out of 10 from around 327 votes. A critics' rating of 5.3 out of 10 from eight reviews places it close to the audience scores.
