Short description
Daisy, a teenager from New York, is sent to stay with her cousins on a farm in the English countryside while her aunt is away. She gradually settles into rural life and falls for her eldest cousin, Eddie. Their time together is cut short when war breaks out and an enemy attacks London. Soldiers arrive at the farm and separate the boys from the girls, and Daisy sets out across a country at war to find Eddie again.
Kevin Macdonald directed the film, the sixth of thirteen he has directed in chronological order, following Life in a Day and preceding Black Sea. Jeremy Brock, Tony Grisoni and Penelope Skinner wrote the screenplay, with Charles Steel, John Battsek and Andrew Ruhemann producing. Saoirse Ronan plays Daisy, George MacKay plays Eddie, and Tom Holland, Harley Bird, Danny McEvoy and Anna Chancellor appear as Isaac, Piper, Joe and Aunt Penn. The film runs 101 minutes.
Released in 2013, the British-Canadian production drew a 6.4 rating from around 33,000 votes on IMDb and a 6.6 from roughly 971 votes on TMDB, while a critics' rating of 6.2 from 107 reviews places it close to the audience scores. The modest vote counts alongside the wide genre spread, from romance and drama to war and science fiction, point to a film that reached a limited audience without strong word of mouth.

- The film is based on Meg Rosoff's novel "How I Live Now" (2004).
- Director Kevin Macdonald initially intended to cast unknown actors for the film and was looking for a 16-year-old American girl for the role of Daisy. However, the role ultimately went to 19-year-old Irishwoman Saoirse Ronan, who read the scene she was given at the audition so powerfully that the entire committee was crying.
- Saoirse Ronan did not dye her hair for the role. She wore a wig.
- Before George MacKay was cast as Edmund, only about ten people had auditioned for the role, each paired with Saoirse Ronan for their audition.
