Inferno

Inferno is a 1980 Italian horror thriller written and directed by Dario Argento, the sixth of the seventeen features he has directed and the film that followed Suspiria in 1977, with Tenebre arriving in 1982. Leigh McCloskey plays Mark Elliot, a student in Rome who receives an unsettling letter from his sister Rose before she disappears. Travelling to New York, he makes his way to the large apartment building near Central Park where she lived, a place full of hidden passages that he explores while searching for her. Rose, a young poet played by Irene Miracle, had come across an old book said to have been written by an alchemist architect, and its claims about three mothers of the underworld convinced her that one of them dwelt in her own building. Around Mark, people connected to the case die in terrible circumstances, and he gradually encounters a supernatural force bound up with the house and its history.

The cast also includes Eleonora Giorgi, Daria Nicolodi, Sacha Pitoëff and Alida Valli, among twenty-six credited performers. The film was produced by Claudio and Salvatore Argento with 20th Century Fox and Produzioni Intersound on a budget of about three million dollars. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.5 from roughly 26,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.6 from a much smaller number of votes, indicating a settled but modest level of approval for a film that runs 107 minutes.
