Angst

Angst is a 1983 Austrian crime and horror film about a man who has just finished a prison sentence for killing an elderly woman. Once released, he is immediately overcome by the urge to kill again. After a taxi driver narrowly escapes him, he forces his way into an isolated house occupied by a woman and her two grown children, one of whom is disabled, and holds the family captive while he acts on his violent impulses. The story is told largely through the killer's own thoughts, which reflect on his troubled upbringing with his mother and grandmother.

The film runs 75 minutes and was directed by Gerald Kargl, who also wrote the screenplay with Zbigniew Rybczyński and produced it with Josef Reitinger-Laska. Erwin Leder plays the central figure, with Robert Hunger-Bühler providing that character's voice. Silvia Rabenreither and Karin Springer voice the daughter, Edith Rosset and Josefine Lakatha the mother, among a credited cast of 30.

On TMDB it holds a 7.1 rating from 439 votes, while a small set of critics' reviews gives it 8.9 out of 10, a notably higher figure than the audience score. The film stands as Kargl's first feature as director.
